What is an Apostille?

An apostille is a certificate that certifies the seals and signatures that are on the documents that have been issued in South Africa, to confirm the genuiness of the documents. An apostille certificate cannot be forged, as the official who has been entrusted to issue an apostille, has also been trusted to carefully inspect the documents, seals, signatures and stamps to certify that they are genuine and that there isn’t any forgery that took place. This certificate confirms that the South African documents apostilled, have genuine seals, stamps and signatures. It also does not in any way confirm anything about the content that is on the document.

However, South Africans that travel to a country that is not a member of the Hague Convention, will have to get their documents certified by the High Court, so that they can be of use in the foreign country that they will be travelling to. The traveler’s documents will be signed in the presence of a Notary Public, then Notary will attach a Certificate of authentication to the signed document, which entails the Notary’s stamp, signature and seal on it. In this instance, after the document has been signed, stamped and sealed by the notary, it can be forwarded to the High Court that is situated around the same area of practice as the Notary Public.
